3-Day Giveaways!

A few posts back I talked about how much I love the Energizer® Energi-To-Go portable phone charger that I got from Energizer®. I’ve only had it for about two weeks and I can already tell you about how it’s come in super handy when I was in a pinch. Yesterday there was a pretty bad storm making its way through Connecticut. I was driving home from a meeting and all of a sudden there was torrential rain, wind whipping through and I could barely see. I had to take three different routes to get home because of trees that had been blown over and into the road. At points I was driving in water that must have been at least a foot deep. I kept hearing reports on the radio that there were possible tornado touchdowns in the area. I finally pulled onto my road only to find it blocked by a large branch that my neighbors were trying to drag out of the way. When I finally made it to my driveway and got out of the car, my phone was ringing off the hook with my family calling because they heard the reports of tornados in Bristol (where I live). I told them I was fine, the neighborhood was a mess and we had no power but I was OK. As I was on the phone I heard that really annoying beep that tells me my phone is about to die. And I had no power. I got a little nervous because I knew Paul wasn’t home yet and my parents would be calling back again to make sure everything was OK, and I needed my phone!

Then I remembered about my Energizer® Energi-To-Go charger! I plugged that in and I was back in business. I was able to take Lily (our dog) out for a walk and stand outside with the neighbors and not have to worry about Paul being able to get in touch with me. It was such a relief to have it when I needed it most.

3-Day Fundraising and Social Media

Maybe some of you who are reading this are are Facebook. Maybe you’re on Twitter as well. Do you have a blog?  Social media for most people is a fun way to stay in touch with friends and family and is something to do when you’re bored. Unless you use social media for your business or company, then you’re mostly right. Facebook and Twitter are fun ways to connect with others, find old friends and make new ones. But you can also use social media for your 3-Day fundraising! Here are some tips for getting the most out of your networks.

1) Facebook – I know sometimes you feel like you’re saying the same thing over and over again, harping on donations and sending out the link to your 3-Day page. What you have to remember is that whenever you post something on Facebook, only a small percentage of your friends will see it. It shows up in their news feed but then gets pushed to the bottom, and unless you’re lucky enough to have it pop up in their Top News stories later on or a day later, then some of your friends have missed it entirely! And those friends who see it more than once certainly aren’t going to unfriend you because of it. You’re raising money for an important cause! If they haven’t donated after seeing the 4th post, maybe the 5th one will be the one that gets them to click and donate. And if they do donate, they’ll feel good seeing you continue to post the link knowing that they’ve already helped you out. So don’t be shy! Post away!

Create an event for your fundraising page and invite your friends to it. This is a pro-active way to share the link with people. If you have the time, post the link directly on your friend’s page, make it a personal ask!

2) Twitter – Everything I said above goes for Twitter as well. When you send out a tweet with your link in it, only a tiny percentage of your followers will see it right then before it gets pushed down the line. Send it out more than once a day! It shouldn’t be the only thing you tweet, but if it’s mixed in with other conversations you’re having it certainly can’t hurt! Make sure you’re using appropriate hashtags as well. Try using hashtag #komen, #the3day, #fundraising, #donation, #charity, #walking and more. Search for different words and see what comes up. You may get donations from people you’ve never met because of the hashtags you use. Also, in the tweet itself ask you friends to re-tweet it for you, and most likely they will. This opens you up to a whole new list of followers.

3) Blogs – Obviously so important to keep people up to date! Use your blogs to tell people why this cause is important to you, how much you’ve raised so far and how many training miles you’ve walked. Make it personal, tell a story, and you’ll get people involved. The wonderful thing about blogs is that they show up in Google searches and you’ll get readership from all over the country and the world, and readers who are specifically interested in what you’re talking about! Find other 3-Day blogs. Read them, support them, comment on them. Link to other 3-Day blogs in your posts. We’re all fundraising for the same cause.

Make sure that no matter what networks you’re in, that you’re linking them all back to each other. This is a great way to build a community on each platform that supports what you’re doing! You’ll meet so many great people who can give advice, who need advice, who can share ideas and thoughts and support! And don’t forget that above all social media is meant to be fun! Don’t be afraid to share your ideas and experiences with others, because then they’ll be willing to do the same with you and by the time you actually get to the 3-Day you’ll already have an awesome network of friends to share the experience with!

The Power of 10

One of the fundraising and teambuilding ideas we’ve talked about this year with Komen Connecticut is “The Power of 10”. You can use the The Power of 10 when recruiting for your team; invite 10 of your friends and have each of them invite 10 of their friends and so on. When fundraising, email 10 of your friends asking them to donate and also to forward your email to 10 of their friends, etc. You may be surprised how many people actually forward your email.

I’ve recently been asking for donation on Facebook and Twitter and using The Power of 10 in another way. On Facebook, I said “I have 524 super cool Facebook friends. If each one of you donated $10 to my 60 mile breast cancer walk, I would make my $5000 goal!! Can you spare $10?” From this, I got a few friends to donate $10 and a couple who donated $20 and $25. I said the same thing on Twitter, “If each 1 of my 425 followers donated $10 to my breast cancer walk, I’d be almost to my goal! Can you spare $10?”. I got a few more followers who donated $10 and a handful others who said they’d give me a check! I also got a donation from someone on Twitter from Ohio that I’ve never met, because one of my Twitter followers retreated my ask! This is a very slow, but effective way to get to your $2300 minimum. Many people will give you more than the $10 you’re asking for.

Try it out on your social networks! Use them to your advantage, because your networks can work for you!

I Heart Komen Connecticut

Happy to report that I am on the Marketing Committee for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure for 2010. This is as close as I’ve gotten to actually working for the organization and I love it. Ask someone who knows me and they’ll tell you that my dream job involves working for Komen… in pretty much any capacity. Clean the bathrooms? You got it! Do nothing but data entry? Love to. But now, be the chair of the Social Media subcomittee for the Marketing Committee? It’s an honor. It really is. I love working with the women in the office, they’re all wonderful and all so dedicated to the cause.

The Race for the Cure in Bushnell Park is June 5, 2010. Registration begins March 1st. Become a fan on Facebook and Twitter and potentially get a free registration up through the end of February!

ALSO I’ve signed up to walk in the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer 3-day, also in June and this year in Boston! I can’t wait to experience this again; create more memories, walk another 60 miles, and raise more money!! Feel free to visit (and donate!) to my walk page. I’m hoping to raise $5000 this year to beat last year’s fundraising, which was just over $4000.
